IEA Report Forecasts Doubling of India's Biofuels Production by 2030 with Enhanced Policies

BIOFUELSBIOPOWERSUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL

A report from the International Energy Agency (IEA) indicates that India's production of liquid and gaseous biofuels could more than double by 2030 if enhanced policy measures are implemented. This growth is essential for energy security and emissions reduction.

The report highlights bioenergy as vital for meeting India's energy demand, supported by policies that have accelerated ethanol and compressed biogas uptake while promoting biodiesel and sustainable aviation fuels. The scaling of biofuels would decrease reliance on imports, boost rural economies, and aid climate goals, leveraging India's agricultural residues and organic waste.

Since the 2018 National Policy on Biofuels, ethanol consumption increased from under 2 billion litres to over 11 billion litres annually. Compressed biogas has seen growth with about 170 operational plants and nearly 300 in development. The IEA forecasts biofuels use to grow by over 50% by 2030, with a potential doubling under stronger support and improved infrastructure.
