Interest Grows in Purchasing Terrace Bay Mill for Potential Biofuel Production
Interest is growing in the purchase of the idled Terrace Bay mill, with a potential buyer proposing plans for either resuming pulp production or converting it for biofuel production. Ontario previously invested $3 million to heat the mill, which is currently unheated, and any deal may require government support. Mayor Paul Malashewski expressed frustration over the lack of communication from the potential buyer, while the Ontario government emphasized the need for a long-term plan before making operational decisions.

There is strong interest in purchasing the idled Terrace Bay mill, with one potential buyer identified as a reputable business. Ontario previously spent $3 million to heat the mill last winter, but it is now unheated as it enters the current winter season.
MPP Lise Vaugeois mentioned that a deal with multinational conglomerate Aditya Birla could lead to the mill resuming pulp production or being converted for biofuel production for customers like Algoma Steel. The potential buyer has made two proposals and may require government support to proceed.
Mayor Paul Malashewski expressed frustration over the lack of communication from Aditya Birla regarding the mill's future. The Ontario government stated that without a long-term plan, it is irresponsible to make operational decisions for the company. Over $200 million has been invested in the mill by the government in conjunction with its owners.
