Investment and Infrastructure Needs for Renewable Energy in Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland aims for 80% renewable electricity consumption by 2030, necessitating significant grid infrastructure upgrades. Current investments are concentrated in the north west, while demand is predominantly in the east and south east, creating a supply-demand imbalance that must be addressed to meet future energy needs.

Northern Ireland's electricity transmission system, managed by SONI, requires substantial investment due to aging infrastructure built in the 1970s. More than £1.3 billion is needed for 45 planned projects, including a key North South Interconnector, which will enhance capacity and expected completion is set for 2031.
Currently, 44% of electricity consumption is sourced from renewables, with 72% derived from wind. However, challenges include a 22% 'dispatch down' rate for wind energy due to grid limitations. As demand for electricity increases with electric vehicles and heat pumps, further grid enhancements will be critical to accommodate this transition while maintaining stability.
