Ireland Targets Biomethane Production Growth by 2026 with New AD Plants

BIOFUELSNATURAL GAS

Ireland is set to increase biomethane production by 2026, leveraging agricultural and food waste. The government aims to replace 10% of fossil gas demand with locally produced renewable gas and plans to support the construction of over 150 anaerobic digestion (AD) plants by 2030.

Greengate Biogas, in partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, is planning the largest biomethane plant in Powerstown, Co Carlow, designed to process 700,000 tonnes of slurry annually. This facility is expected to provide energy for approximately 22,700 households and contribute significantly to the national biomethane target. The initiative also seeks to enhance farm incomes and reduce carbon emissions, although it faces challenges related to land use and environmental impacts.
