Itochu Interested in Montenegro's 50 MW Waste-to-Energy Incinerator Project
Japan's Itochu has expressed interest in Montenegro's planned 50 MW waste-to-energy incinerator in Podgorica, aimed at improving municipal waste management in line with EU directives. A consortium of local and Slovenian firms has been awarded a EUR 435,600 contract for a feasibility study, with documentation expected within two months. This project marks a significant step, as the only existing municipal waste incinerator in the Western Balkans is located in Belgrade, Serbia.

Montenegro plans to construct a 50 MW incinerator to address municipal waste management, with Japan's Itochu showing interest in the investment. Following a feasibility study call for a waste-to-energy facility in Podgorica, Prime Minister Milojko Spajić announced the project's alignment with EU directives.
The public-private partnership will enable the construction of the incinerator, which may serve other municipalities as well. A consortium of local firms Vatreks Rescue CG and Medix, along with Slovenia-based Medix, was awarded the feasibility study contract worth EUR 435,600.
The consortium is expected to deliver documentation within two months. Currently, the only municipal waste incinerator in the Western Balkans is in Belgrade, Serbia. Podgorica's waste utility, Deponija, manages the city's landfill and plans to build a biogas power plant, having completed the necessary study.
