Kashmir Launches 25,000-Litre Community Biogas Plant in Ganderbal
The Rural Development Department of Kashmir has begun constructing a 25,000-litre biogas plant in Ganderbal, costing ₹35 lakh. This initiative is part of a broader plan to establish similar facilities across all districts of Jammu and Kashmir, aimed at promoting renewable energy and efficient waste management.

The Ganderbal district's community biogas plant will utilize anaerobic digestion, processing local cattle dung to produce biogas and organic slurry. Designed to meet the cooking fuel needs of approximately 10 households, the project also aims to reduce reliance on LPG and firewood, while managing cattle waste effectively.
Equipped with a thermostatic control system and IoT sensors for monitoring, the facility addresses local climate challenges. A community participation model will engage local households and dairy farmers in operations, overseen by a user-group committee. This project is set to serve as a demonstration for other districts, enhancing sustainable agricultural practices and reducing methane emissions in the region.
