Kempegowda International Airport Launches Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre with 77 TPD Capacity
Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru has inaugurated its Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre, capable of processing 77 tonnes of waste per day. The facility aims to significantly reduce landfill disposal to 2-3% by recycling or recovering 97-98% of waste, utilizing bio-methanation technology for organic waste and advanced segregation systems for inorganic waste. This initiative aligns with the airport's sustainability goals, including achieving net-zero emissions by 2030.

Kempegowda International Airport Bengaluru (BLR Airport) inaugurated its Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre (ISWMC) with a processing capacity of 77 tonnes per day. The facility aims to manage the airport's solid waste, currently generated at 24-26 tonnes per day, through scientific waste processing and circular economy practices.
The ISWMC expects to reduce landfill disposal to 2-3% of total waste, recycling or recovering 97-98% through in-house processes and authorized partners. The plant treats organic waste via bio-methanation technology to produce compressed biogas, liquid organic manure, and compost, while inorganic waste is processed through segregation systems for recycling.
BLR Airport is recognized for its sustainability efforts, achieving Level 5 Accreditation under ACI's Airport Carbon Accreditation programme and aiming for net-zero emissions by 2030. The initiative is part of a broader sustainability vision to empower stakeholders through environmental responsibility.
