Leonberg Unveils Largest Bio-Waste Facility in Baden-Württemberg with 72,000 Tonnes Annual Capacity
BIOFUELSNATURAL GAS
The bio-waste facility in Leonberg has been reconstructed after a fire in September 2019 and is now the largest of its kind in Baden-Württemberg, with a capacity of 72,000 tonnes per year. Managed by Bioabfallverwertung Leonberg, a joint venture of Böblingen and Esslingen counties, Göppingen County will join in 2027.
The facility processes biomass into four products: biomethane, liquid CO2, quality compost, and liquid fertilizer. The project's cost is around 54 million euros, funded by insurance, federal grants, and self-financing. The facility aims to demonstrate effective energy and material recovery from bio-waste.
