Lesotho Electricity Company Undergoes Management Overhaul Amidst Corruption Allegations

SOLAR ENERGY

The Lesotho Electricity Company (LEC) is facing severe financial challenges due to allegations of mismanagement and corruption. In October 2025, the Lesotho government initiated a management overhaul to address these issues.

Ts'eliso 'Mokela has been appointed as Acting Managing Director to lead restructuring efforts aimed at restoring LEC's financial health. This includes a reduction in executive vehicle allocations and a focus on direct procurement from manufacturers.

LEC reported a loss of M78 million for 2022/2023, with over M500 million unaccounted for. It has signed agreements for solar power generation with BJT and One Power, aiming to reduce reliance on costly electricity imports from Eskom, where LEC purchases electricity at M6 per unit but sells it at M1.50. The company is also seeking tariff increases and has secured a 30-year repayment plan for a government loan due to its financial struggles.
