Lloyd's Register Launches Comprehensive Biofuel Advisory Service for Shipping Industry
Lloyd's Register has introduced a new biofuel advisory service aimed at assisting shipping companies in the safe and efficient adoption of biofuels throughout the supply chain. This service provides end-to-end support from production and certification to delivery and onboard use, addressing concerns about performance, safety, and compliance. With over 20 years of experience in biofuels, the initiative combines expertise from Lloyd's Register's energy transition advisory and its fuel oil bunker analysis service. The launch, held during London International Shipping Week, aims to empower shipowners and fuel suppliers in making informed decisions.
In an era where sustainable practices are becoming imperative, biofuels are emerging as a viable alternative for the shipping industry, poised to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Recognizing this potential, Lloyd's Register has unveiled a new biofuel advisory service, designed to facilitate a seamless transition for shipping companies looking to adopt these alternative fuels. Launched during London International Shipping Week, this initiative offers comprehensive support across the entire biofuel supply chain—from production and certification to delivery and onboard utilization.
James Frew, Director of Lloyd's Register Advisory, emphasizes that while biofuels present an immediate solution for emission reductions, shipowners require assurance regarding performance, safety, and regulatory compliance. The newly established advisory service aims to instill confidence at every stage of biofuel adoption by integrating technical expertise with regulatory insight.
This service builds upon two years of groundwork, merging Lloyd's Register's energy transition advisory with the extensive experience of its Fuel Oil Bunker Analysis and Advisory Service (FOBAS). With over two decades of collaboration with shipowners, suppliers, and producers, FOBAS has been instrumental in pioneering safe and scalable biofuel adoption within the maritime sector. Notable achievements include supporting United European Car Carriers in utilizing cashew nutshell liquid as a sustainable marine fuel and aiding Whitaker Tankers in obtaining the first FAME B100 certification.
By providing clarity on regulatory compliance, fuel performance, and operational risks, Lloyd's Register enables clients to make informed decisions more swiftly. The organization has already engaged with leading biofuel producers to evaluate the impact of regulatory frameworks on market demand and has assisted major bunker suppliers in creating transparent documentation for buyers. Additionally, it has guided shipowners through the essential testing and operational steps required to incorporate biofuels into their fleets.
The launch event featured a 90-minute session titled "Fuel for Thought: The Biofuel Briefing," where experts discussed future outlooks, cost advantages, and compliance considerations for those contemplating the switch to biofuels. This initiative not only positions Lloyd's Register as a leader in promoting alternative fuels but also underscores the maritime industry's commitment to a more sustainable future.
