Lonestar Launches StarVault, First Commercial Lunar Data Storage Service
Lonestar has initiated StarVault, marking the first operational commercial data center on the Moon. This service aims to provide long-term cold storage for critical data, insulated from terrestrial disasters.

StarVault, developed by Lonestar, offers a lunar-based data storage solution designed for long-term archives, with an operational latency of approximately 2.5 seconds. It is positioned as a backup against extreme terrestrial catastrophes, appealing to governments and large corporations seeking off-planet data restoration points.
The first operational mission validated the hardware's resilience to lunar conditions. Future expansions include a second module anticipated by late 2026 and collaborations with European national archives.
The viability of such a service for widespread commercial use remains uncertain, as the necessity for lunar backups may not be a priority for many organizations. The competitive landscape is evolving, with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin monitoring developments.
