Mahatransco Completes Babhaleshwar-Kudus 400kV Transmission Line After Decade-Long Delay
The Babhaleshwar-Kudus 400kV transmission line has been commissioned by Mahatransco, enhancing power supply in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project, which faced delays since its 2010 approval, now enables an additional power capacity of 3,000 MW and reduces transmission losses by 5 MW.

Mahatransco has successfully commissioned the Babhaleshwar-Kudus 400kV transmission line, providing critical power infrastructure for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The project, covering approximately 228 km with 715 transmission towers, was initially approved in 2010 but was delayed until March 2026 due to technical and administrative challenges.
It is expected to improve voltage levels and reduce transmission losses by about 5 MW while increasing power transfer capacity by up to 3,000 MW. Key hurdles included obtaining permissions near the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope and various land and environmental challenges.
The line will alleviate congestion in the existing Padghe-Babhaleshwar corridor and support the Kudus substation to meet rising electricity demand. The completion underscores the importance of inter-agency cooperation and project management in addressing infrastructure needs.
