Marina Coast Water District Revives Desalination Project to Enhance Water Supply
The Marina Coast Water District is advancing a desalination plant project to supply 300 acre-feet of drinking water annually, addressing groundwater reliance. This initiative follows a successful pilot in 1996 and aims to mitigate groundwater overdraft in the region.

The Marina Coast Water District (MCWD) has initiated Phase 1 of a desalination project at Marina State Beach, set to produce 300 acre-feet of potable water annually. The project, which originally began in 1996, was halted due to cost concerns but is now being revived to reduce dependency on local aquifers.
Currently, infrastructure restoration is underway with water quality tests in progress. A $1.2 million contract was awarded for Phase 1, while Phase 2 costs remain unspecified. The desalination plant is projected to be operational by early 2027. In conjunction, MCWD is exploring additional water supplies, including treated recycled water from the Pure Water Monterey project.
