Maritime Shipping Bunkers Sixfold Increase in Bio-LNG in Rotterdam Port in 2025
In 2025, maritime shipping in the Port of Rotterdam bunkered 17,644 m³ of bio-LNG, a sixfold increase from 2024. Total fuel bunkering reached 9.8 million tonnes, with a 3,000-tonne increase from the previous year. The volume of biomethanol also rose significantly to 11,819 tonnes. However, total bioblended fuels dropped by 14% compared to 2024, with recovery noted from Q3 2025. Additionally, the first ammonia transfer between ships occurred in April 2025, aiding future green ammonia bunkering preparations.

In 2025, maritime shipping in the Port of Rotterdam saw a significant increase in bio-LNG bunkering, totaling 17,644 m³, a sixfold rise from 2,775 m³ in 2024. Total fuel bunkering reached 9.8 million tonnes, up by 3,000 tonnes from the previous year.
The bunkered biomethanol volume surged to 11,819 tonnes from 3,946 tonnes in 2024. The overall bioblended fuels decreased by 14% compared to 2024, but volumes began to rise again from Q3 2025. This decline was attributed to increased bioblended fuel availability in Asia due to EU anti-dumping duties on Chinese biodiesel. In April 2025, the first ship-to-ship ammonia transfer took place at a terminal in Rotterdam, facilitating future green ammonia bunkering.
