MAX Burgers Acquires Sweden's First 1,000-Year Biochar Carbon Credits
MAX Burgers has purchased 1,200 tonnes of biochar credits from Hjelmsäter farm, marking a significant advancement in its carbon strategy. This deal, validated for a minimum of 1,000 years under the Rainbow Standard, signifies a shift towards sustainable carbon removal practices in Sweden's agriculture sector.

On April 14, 2026, MAX Burgers announced the acquisition of 1,200 tonnes of biochar carbon removal credits from Hjelmsäter farm over three years. This purchase, validated for a minimum of 1,000 years under the Rainbow Standard, represents a new direction for the company in its climate strategy, which has included 2 million tonnes of carbon credits for tropical reforestation since 2008.
The biochar is produced from FSC-certified forestry residues through pyrolysis, improving soil quality and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers. MAX Burgers aims to match its carbon removal contributions with its direct emissions (Scope 1) and purchased energy (Scope 2). This move could encourage other companies to invest in high-integrity carbon removal methods, enhancing the credibility of long-duration carbon storage.
