Mohali Municipal Corporation Launches Door-to-Door Waste Segregation Initiative
The Mohali Municipal Corporation has initiated a door-to-door waste segregation program, mandating households and businesses to categorize waste into wet, dry, and hazardous types. This initiative, managed by M/s Suntan Life Pvt. Ltd under a public-private partnership, aims to enhance waste management amid a growing garbage crisis exacerbated by the closure of the Phase 8 dumping site. A surveillance system and complaint redressal cell will support the program, while plans for a biogas processing plant are underway.

The Mohali Municipal Corporation launched a door-to-door segregated waste collection program requiring households and businesses to sort waste into wet, dry, and hazardous categories. The initiative, executed by M/s Suntan Life Pvt.
Ltd under a PPP model for three years, aims to structure waste management in Mohali. A surveillance mechanism will monitor waste collection, with a dedicated patrolling team to prevent illegal dumping.
A complaint redressal cell and a control center for real-time operation monitoring will be established. Currently, Mohali generates 160-170 metric tonnes of waste daily, and the closure of the Phase 8 dumping site has intensified the garbage crisis. The MC is seeking alternate waste management sites while a biogas processing plant is planned.
