Napa to Install Anaerobic Digestion System for Organic Waste to Renewable Natural Gas

NATURAL GASBIOFUELS

Napa is installing an anaerobic digestion system to convert organic waste into renewable natural gas for garbage trucks. The City Council approved a memorandum of understanding with Napa Recycling on February 3, 2026.

The $30 million system will be funded by a $10 million CalRecycle grant and private financing by Zero Waste Energy. It will process 32,000 to 44,000 tons of organic waste annually, generating 350,000 diesel gallon equivalents for 36 trucks.

The city will pay $5.75 per gallon for the first three years. The system also produces digestate for fertilizer and compost. Annual payments to Napa Recycling will range from $1.1 million to $1.4 million until 2030. The project aligns with Senate Bill 1383, aiming for a 75% reduction in landfill food waste by 2025.
