Niagara Falls Wastewater Facility Receives $34.7M for Urgent Upgrades
The Niagara Falls wastewater treatment plant will undergo significant upgrades funded by $34.7 million from provincial and regional sources. This project is critical for maintaining treatment reliability and compliance with environmental standards.

A total of $34.7 million has been allocated for urgent upgrades to the Niagara Falls wastewater treatment facility, with $24.5 million from the Ontario government and the remainder from Niagara Region's capital reserve fund. The project is prioritized due to deteriorating primary clarifiers and other critical components that pose operational and compliance risks.
Originally built in 1964 and expanded in 1986, the facility's current condition threatens its ability to treat sewage effectively, increasing the likelihood of environmental violations. The detailed design phase is underway, with Stantec Consulting Limited awarded the contract in August 2025.
Construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, following a tender process. Failure to upgrade the facility could lead to costly operational disruptions and increased lifecycle costs.
