Nigeria's Ethanol Import Dependency Amidst Cassava Abundance
Nigeria, the leading global cassava producer, imports significant ethanol volumes, impacting its foreign reserves. With 62.7 million metric tons of cassava produced in 2023, transitioning to domestic ethanol production could mitigate import reliance and enhance local job creation.

Nigeria produced 62.7 million metric tons of cassava in 2023 but still imports up to 75% of its ethanol, approximately 300 to 350 million liters. The country's demand for ethanol reached 400 million liters in 2024, projected to rise alongside population growth and renewable biofuel needs.
Ethanol production from cassava could replace imports if 1.8 to 2 million tons of cassava are utilized, only three percent of national output. However, significant capital and logistical challenges exist, necessitating organized supply systems and consistent feedstock delivery. Successful models in other countries highlight the potential for domestic production to bolster Nigeria's agro-industrial sector, increase rural incomes, and reduce foreign exchange exposure.
