North Carolina's Canton Plans New Wastewater Treatment Plant with State Support
Canton, NC is advancing the construction of a wastewater treatment plant, supported by $25 million in state funding. This project is critical for local infrastructure recovery, particularly after the closure of the town's papermill in 2023, which previously provided wastewater services.

Canton has allocated $25 million for a new wastewater treatment plant, following the closure of its papermill in 2023. The project includes $3.5 million recently designated for construction and water system connections with nearby towns.
The General Assembly previously allocated $38 million, and an additional $14 million was sourced from a Hurricane Helene relief bill for land purchase. The construction site will be positioned on higher ground to enhance flood resilience.
However, there remains a funding gap of approximately $650 million for similar infrastructure needs in the region, with no new federal appropriations in nearly 18 months. Stakeholders are advocating for Congress to secure further financial assistance for recovery efforts.
