NPHarvest Launches Nutrient Recovery Pilot in Germany's Biogas Market
NPHarvest has initiated a pilot project in Lower Saxony to recover nitrogen and phosphorus from biogas digestate. This installation addresses stricter EU nutrient regulations while creating commercial value for biogas operators.

NPHarvest's pilot installation at Biogas Westerbakum GmbH & Co. KG in Lower Saxony began on March 10 and will run for four months, processing about 20 cubic meters of liquid digestate daily to recover approximately 26 tons of nutrients annually.
The project allows operators to convert digestate from a cost burden into a marketable resource, aligning with Germany's stringent nutrient regulations under the EU Nitrates Directive. The biogas sector faces rising transport costs and limits on digestate spreading, intensifying the need for localized nutrient solutions.
NPHarvest's membrane-based technology can recover up to 90% of nitrogen and phosphorus, facilitating modular integration into existing biogas infrastructure without disrupting operations. This pilot builds on previous successes in Ankara, Türkiye, and is supported by €2.2 million in funding and an additional €1.2 million from Business Finland.
