NZSTI and Golf NZ Launch Project to Measure Golf Course Carbon Sequestration
NZSTI and Golf New Zealand have initiated a project to develop a Carbon Sequestration Model (CSM) for golf courses. This tool aims to quantify the environmental value of fairways amidst increasing pressure from housing development.

The New Zealand Sports Turf Institute (NZSTI) and Golf New Zealand are developing a Carbon Sequestration Model (CSM) to evaluate how much carbon is captured by golf courses. This initiative is critical as golf courses face scrutiny from developers amid New Zealand's housing crisis.
The CSM will provide evidence of the environmental benefits of maintaining green spaces, aiming to quantify the carbon loss if these areas are converted to housing. Research is currently underway at Maungakiekie Golf Club, with further assessments planned. The final model, expected to be validated over five years, will aid clubs in demonstrating their environmental contributions and assist in offsetting emissions from maintenance practices.
