Perdue Farms' broiler processing facility in Lewiston, North Carolina, has been named the 2025 full treatment category winner by the U.S. Poultry & Egg Association Clean Water Award. The facility processes 347,000 birds daily and treats 2.4 million gallons of wastewater each day.

It achieved a 22% reduction in water usage per bird in FY25 and is approximately 29% ahead of its FY26 energy reduction goals. The facility's wastewater treatment includes a partnership with Darling Ingredients, enhancing environmental performance through shared resources.

Upgrades in wastewater treatment in 1989 and 2009 targeted ammonia-nitrogen and total nitrogen, respectively. In 2022, anaerobic lagoons were covered to capture methane, converted into renewable natural gas with GreenGas USA.

The facility has achieved significant landfill diversion rates, with a total of over 7.5 million pounds diverted. The efforts underscore a commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
