PLN Targets 15% Utilization of Biomethane with Trials in North Sumatra
PLN Energi Primer Indonesia aims to be both an off-taker and investor in national biomethane development, targeting 10-15% CBG usage by 2030. The economic potential includes significant carbon reduction and job creation.

PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) is committed to becoming an off-taker and investor in the development of biomethane, specifically targeting a CBG utilization rate of 10-15% by 2030. During a recent event in Medan, PLN EPI's Director Hokkop Situngkir emphasized the goal of achieving 3-4% biomass utilization through co-firing across power plants, with a longer-term aim of 10% as mandated by regulations.
The potential economic impact includes savings of around Rp1 trillion and the creation of up to 150,000 green jobs, alongside a carbon reduction of 20 million tons CO2 equivalent. With approximately 300 palm oil mills in Indonesia, there is a significant opportunity to generate biomethane from Palm Oil Mill Effluent (POME), equating to 13 LNG cargoes annually.
