Residents Demand Action on Dry Waste Accumulation at Erode's Vendipalayam Compost Yard

BIOFUELS

Residents in Erode are pressing the Erode Corporation to process and clear the mounting dry waste at the Vendipalayam compost yard, where 60 to 70 tonnes of dry waste are disposed of daily. The city generates 180 to 220 tonnes of waste each day, comprising 60 tonnes of biodegradable and 140 to 150 tonnes of non-biodegradable waste.

Since the completion of bio-mining operations in 2021, more than 1.75 lakh tonnes of dry waste have accumulated at the site. Residents have expressed concerns over fire risks during summer due to the waste build-up.

Corporation officials noted that bio-mining is feasible only for waste older than seven years. City Health Officer M. Karthikeyan announced plans to propose a material recovery facility or biogas plant to manage dry waste to the State government soon.
