The Sarawak government is initiating a RM200,000 recycling centre project in Tabuan Hilir to address climate change and enhance environmental sustainability. Funded by the Rural Transformation Programme, this project aims to create economic opportunities for local communities and will employ a bioenergy approach to convert waste into energy.
Kuching generates approximately 700 tonnes of domestic waste daily, contributing to Sarawak's total of about 2,000 tonnes from residential and industrial sources. The project will also feature a reward system for residents to convert waste collection into redeemable points.
The exact location for the centre is yet to be confirmed, with construction expected to start once identified and completed within a year. Additionally, community clean-up initiatives are encouraged to maintain hygiene and reduce disease spread.
