Selangor Plans Centralized Anaerobic Digestion System for Pig Waste Management in Tanjung Sepat
The Selangor government is establishing a centralized Anaerobic Digestion System (ADS) in Tanjung Sepat to manage pig waste while planning the relocation of pig farms to Bukit Tagar. This interim solution targets immediate pollution control, handling approximately 200-250 tonnes of pig waste generated daily by 80,000-100,000 pigs.
The ADS will treat waste locally, utilizing mesophilic continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTR) to produce biogas and organic fertilizer. With fast-tracked approvals, the facility could be operational within 16-18 months, significantly sooner than farm relocation.
Estimated capital expenditure for the ADS is US$5-6 million, with annual operating costs between US$700,000 and US$1 million. The system is designed to be environmentally sustainable and could later be repurposed for other organic waste treatments.
