Shanghai Pig Farm Converts Waste to Green Energy and Fertilizer
The Songlin Ecological Agricultural Zone in Shanghai converts 100,000 metric tons of pig waste annually into 3.65 million cubic meters of biogas, integrating biomethane into the urban gas network. This sustainable model demonstrates potential for zero-waste urban development.

The Songlin Ecological Agricultural Zone, located in Jinshan district, Shanghai, processes 100,000 metric tons of pig waste each year, achieving a full conversion into resources. The facility raises around 80,000 hogs annually and produces 3.65 million cubic meters of biogas, which is purposed for fertilizer and energy.
The biogas slurry fertilizes 867 hectares, saving approximately 2 million yuan ($290,000) in costs. This farm is the first in Shanghai to integrate biomethane into the city's gas pipeline. The model showcases a viable approach for zero-waste agricultural practices, which may influence future urban development strategies.
