Singapore Establishes Regulatory Sandbox for 300MW Biomethane Supply Chain Development

Singapore is exploring biomethane, a low-carbon renewable fuel, to reduce emissions from its power sector. In October, the government announced a regulatory sandbox for a 300MW biomethane supply chain, which could provide energy for approximately 600,000 households.

Biomethane, produced from organic waste, is chemically identical to natural gas but has a lower carbon footprint. Currently, Singapore's electricity generation relies on natural gas for about 95% of its needs, contributing 40% of national emissions.

The IEA predicts global biomethane production will more than double by 2030, with significant growth expected in Brazil and India. Southeast Asia has high biomethane potential due to its agricultural industry. However, current production is limited, and expanding biomethane use will require supportive regulations and infrastructure.
