Smart Technologies Enhance Worker Safety in Semiconductor and Steel Industries
Companies are increasingly utilizing advanced technologies to monitor worker health and prevent heat-related illnesses. This initiative is significant as it addresses the growing risks associated with extreme heat in industrial environments.

Samsung has implemented a heat stress management system at its semiconductor construction site in Pyeongtaek, providing over 1,000 Galaxy Watches to monitor worker health during heatwaves exceeding 36 degrees Celsius. The system prioritizes elderly workers and those with health conditions, detecting 35 alarms and 4 abnormal situations in one week, leading to timely interventions.
Similarly, POSCO DX distributed smartbands to workers at Pohang and Gwangyang Steelworks to measure body temperature and pulse, planning to evaluate effectiveness this year for wider implementation next year. Lotte Engineering & Construction utilizes facial recognition technology to monitor health via a biometric app, currently used by about 3,000 workers. As extreme heat becomes more common, these technologies are crucial in maintaining worker safety but may require ongoing assessment for long-term effectiveness.
