South Africa Advances Sugar Masterplan to Enhance Industry Stability
The South African government, alongside SA Canegrowers and industry stakeholders, has launched Phase II of the Sugar Industry Masterplan to bolster the struggling sugar sector. This initiative aims to stabilize the industry and promote diversification, assisting over one million livelihoods reliant on sugar production.

South Africa's Phase II of the Sugar Industry Masterplan has been signed to support the local sugar sector facing challenges from rising diesel and fertilizer costs and competition from subsidized imports. The agreement encompasses growers, millers, and major end-users, aiming to stabilize the industry for over one million individuals dependent on it.
The plan emphasizes diversification, targeting opportunities in biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel, contingent on investment and policy backing. SA Canegrowers, representing approximately 1,250 large-scale and 30,000 small-scale farmers, advocates for a fair tariff system to protect local producers. This renewed commitment is crucial for the industry's long-term sustainability and economic contribution.
