ST1 Biokraft Opens Major Biogas Facility in Mönsterås, Sweden
ST1 Biokraft has officially launched its flagship biogas facility in Mönsterås, Kalmar County, a notable addition to Sweden's renewable energy landscape. This facility, the company’s thirteenth, boasts an impressive production capacity of approximately 138 GWh of liquefied biogas annually, equivalent to around 13 million liters of diesel. The plant is strategically positioned to harness local resources, receiving about 260,000 tonnes of livestock manure each year from one of Sweden's most livestock-dense municipalities.
Construction commenced in February 2023 and reached completion in the spring of 2025, with the first deliveries of biogas already initiated in August. Production is expected to scale up to full capacity by early next year.
Miika Johansson, CEO of ST1 Biokraft, articulated the significance of the facility, describing it as a milestone in the company’s ambition to achieve a production target of 3 TWh of biogas by 2030. Johansson emphasized that this plant exemplifies the principles of a circular economy by converting local raw materials into renewable energy while simultaneously providing high-quality biofertilizer to enhance agricultural practices.
The environmental benefits of liquefied biogas are substantial, with the company asserting that it can reduce carbon emissions by up to 200% compared to fossil fuels. The plant not only contributes to lowering the climate impact of heavy transport and shipping but also produces biofertilizer that decreases the reliance on synthetic fertilizers, promoting healthier soil.
This facility represents a broader Nordic expansion strategy, involving investments totaling approximately 900 million SEK, partially supported by Sweden's environmental protection agency through its Klimatklivet program. Local farmers hold co-ownership of the plant through Mönsterås Biogas AB, ensuring that the community remains closely integrated in the venture.
ST1 Biokraft is committed to further expanding its footprint in the Nordics, with two additional plants currently under construction in Finland. The company has allocated substantial resources, with plans for investments totaling around SEK 11 billion (approximately EUR 1 billion) in new biogas production and distribution facilities. The Mönsterås facility, with an investment of around SEK 900 million (about EUR 82.2 million), underscores ST1 Biokraft's dedication to sustainable energy solutions and the promotion of local agricultural practices.
