ST1 Biokraft Unveils Major Biogas Facility in Mönsterås, Sweden
On September 10, 2025, ST1 Biokraft celebrated the inauguration of its latest biogas facility in Mönsterås, Kalmar County. This state-of-the-art plant, the company's 13th, boasts a remarkable production capacity of approximately 138 GWh of liquid biogas annually, positioning it among Sweden's largest biogas plants. The journey began with the first groundbreaking in February 2023, and after substantial efforts, the facility achieved operational status with its inaugural biogas delivery in August 2025.
Mönsterås, known for its dense agricultural landscape, provides an excellent supply of substrates, with the facility processing around 260,000 tons of manure each year. "We are incredibly pleased to have inaugurated the plant in Mönsterås," expressed Miika Johansson, CEO of ST1 Biokraft. He acknowledged the collaborative efforts of employees, suppliers, partners, and stakeholders, emphasizing the plant's pivotal role in achieving the company's long-term goal of producing 3 TWh of biogas by 2030, reinforcing its ambition to become a leading biogas provider in the Nordic region.
Liquid biogas has the potential to reduce carbon footprints by up to 200% compared to fossil fuels, making it an essential element in curtailing the climate impact from heavy transportation and shipping. Additionally, the facility generates biogas fertilizer in five fractions, which, when returned to agriculture, lessens the need for synthetic fertilizers while balancing phosphorus and nitrogen levels in the soil.
"This biogas initiative exemplifies the principles of a circular economy, addressing several significant societal challenges," stated Johansson. By harnessing local resources to produce biogas, the facility enhances Sweden’s energy self-sufficiency and reduces reliance on imported fossil fuels. Furthermore, it provides a competitive, low-emission alternative for heavy-duty transport, shipping, and industry, while offering high-quality, locally produced biogas fertilizer that improves soil conditions for regional farmers.
The Mönsterås facility is part of ST1 Biokraft's broader strategy to expand its operations in the Nordic market, with two additional plants currently underway in Finland. The company has announced plans for investments totaling approximately 11 billion kronor (1 billion euros) in new production and distribution facilities to meet its long-term objectives.
The investment in Mönsterås alone amounted to around 900 million kronor, partly financed through the Climate Leap program, which provided 154 million kronor in support. Notably, this flagship facility was developed in partnership with local farmers, who are stakeholders in Mönsterås Biogas AB, fostering community engagement and investment in sustainable energy solutions.
