Study Identifies Research Needs for Decarbonized Chemical Industry
The DECHEMA study outlines pathways for the German chemical industry to transition from fossil carbon to alternative sources. This transformation is crucial for reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels and enhancing sustainability in chemical production.

The DECHEMA study, commissioned by IREES GmbH, identifies alternative carbon sources to replace fossil naphtha and natural gas in Germany's chemical industry. Three primary sources are proposed: CO₂ from unavoidable point sources, biogas, and plastic waste.
The study highlights various technical pathways for producing petrochemical platform chemicals in a climate-neutral manner by utilizing power-to-X processes, biomass gasification, and thermochemical plastic recycling. It emphasizes the necessity of infrastructure, including competitive energy prices and expanded CO₂ transport networks.
Key research areas include catalyst development and reaction engineering, with a focus on integrating these technologies for optimal efficiency. The transformation will shift dependency from fossil imports to hydrogen imports, requiring significant investment in retrofitting existing facilities.
