Swindon Approves New Gas Storage Dome at Rivan Industries’ Renewable Energy Site Despite Safety Concerns
Swindon Borough Council has approved the construction of a new gas storage dome at Rivan Industries' renewable energy site in Wroughton, despite safety concerns regarding potential gas leaks. The facility will include a 13-meter diameter dome for storing hydrogen and carbon dioxide, consolidating its plans to reduce the site footprint and streamline operations. Development is set to begin in early 2025, with the facility permitted for temporary use until January 2030.

Swindon Borough Council approved the addition of a new gas storage dome at Rivan Industries' renewable energy facility in Wroughton, amidst safety fears related to gas leaks. The facility will feature a 13-meter diameter dome, increasing to 14 meters with the outer membrane, for storing small amounts of hydrogen and carbon dioxide.
The project has consolidated its initial plan from five shipping containers to one 40ft container for renewable natural gas generation and three 20ft containers for carbon dioxide, a site office, and equipment storage. The overall site footprint has been reduced from 5,415.47 sq m to 4,931.85 sq m.
The facility's temporary use is permitted until January 2030, after which it must be decommissioned. Development began in early 2025, located at the Science and Innovation Park, a former RAF site.
