Switzerland Reports Industrial CDR in 2024 Greenhouse Gas Inventory
Switzerland has reported industrial carbon dioxide removal (CDR) for the first time in its 2024 greenhouse gas inventory. This inclusion is significant as it sets a precedent for other nations aiming to enhance their sustainability metrics.

In its submission to the UNFCCC, Switzerland's 2024 greenhouse gas inventory indicates a 27.3% reduction in emissions compared to 1990 levels, totaling 40.1 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent. This inventory marks the first instance of including industrial CDR, drawing from the DemoUpCARMA & Storage project, which demonstrated CO2 utilization and permanent storage solutions.
Funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy and the Federal Office for the Environment, the project concluded in late 2023 and focused on CO2 management in concrete. The reported negative emissions stem from capturing biogenic CO2 from biogas upgrades, emphasizing the importance of industrial CDR in achieving national and global sustainability goals.
