Switzerland's Biomethane Production Could Enhance Energy Independence
A study led by the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) indicates that Switzerland can significantly reduce gas imports by utilizing local biomass for biomethane production. This shift is crucial as it can mitigate the impacts of global energy market fluctuations and enhance energy security for the country.

Switzerland could meet a substantial portion of its gas needs through local biomethane production, according to a study by PSI and Verenum AG for the Federal Office of Energy (OFEN). The analysis suggests that the use of biomass, including wood waste and sewage sludge, could potentially decrease gas demand significantly.
While full gas self-sufficiency is unlikely, the study indicates that domestic production could cover up to half of future gas requirements. Effective energy systems should focus on efficient electrical technologies and maximizing biomethane output while recognizing ongoing industrial gas needs. The technical maturity of gasification processes is high, with upcoming innovations expected to stabilize energy prices during global crises.
