TECHNALIA Patents Innovative Reactor for Synthetic Natural Gas Production from Biogas
TECHNALIA has patented a millichannel reactor that converts CO2 in biogas to synthetic natural gas with over 95% methane concentration. This advancement enhances the efficiency of upgrading processes, making it suitable for both small and large-scale applications.

TECHNALIA has developed a patented millichannel reactor capable of converting biogas CO2 into synthetic natural gas, achieving over 95% methane concentration in a single step. This reactor, which intensifies the methaneation reaction, features a millimeter architecture that significantly enhances heat and mass transfer, allowing stable operation under varying conditions.
It has reached TRL6 in pilot testing, demonstrating high efficiency and effective raw material utilization, enabling the gas to be injected directly into natural gas networks. The modular design allows for scalability across various plant sizes. Collaborations with Lointek, Repsol, Petronor, and Awaes (Tedagua) confirm its commercial viability.
