Thailand Sugar Industry Pursues Environmental Sustainability Initiatives
Thailand's sugar sector is implementing measures to reduce emissions and pollution, crucial for meeting climate targets. The country, the third-largest sugar exporter globally, aims to cut agricultural burning and enhance sustainability in production processes.

Thailand's sugar industry, a key player in the global market and a significant source of export revenue, is taking steps to address environmental concerns. The Khon Kaen Sugar Industry Plc plans to reduce burned cane deliveries to under 10% by 2026, supported by initiatives encouraging fresh cane harvesting and better pricing for non-burned sugarcane.
Additionally, the company aims for net-zero emissions by 2050 and has reported a reduction of over 227,000 tonnes of carbon emissions in 2024. Investments in renewable energy, including biomass and biogas plants, are also underway. These efforts align with national targets to cut agricultural burning by 15% this year and reflect a strategic shift toward sustainable practices in Thailand's sugar production landscape.
