Thopen Secures Urgent Protection as It Prepares Judicial Recovery Filing
Thopen, a renewable energy generation company under Pontal Energy, has obtained urgent legal protection against creditors while preparing for judicial recovery. The firm cites acute liquidity shortages due to unfavorable market conditions and prior strategic decisions.

Thopen, one of Brazil's largest distributed generation (DG) companies, has received a 60-day urgent protection order against creditors as it prepares for judicial recovery. The company claims to face significant liquidity challenges stemming from market factors and previous administrative decisions, following a series of acquisitions including biogas and solar assets from several firms in the past year.
Furthermore, delays in operational projects and high CDI-indexed debt have exacerbated its financial situation. Thopen's crisis reflects broader issues within the DG sector, impacted by high-interest rates and intensified market competition.
Potential consolidators include energy distribution groups and financial market players seeking to acquire DG assets. Thopen has raised funds through multiple debenture issuances and claims to have 700 MWp of installed capacity.
