Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice-President of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, emphasized that India can leverage greener internal combustion engines (ICE) as a strategic advantage in promoting sustainable mobility for the Global South. With the automotive industry shifting towards a multi-path powertrain approach, Gulati noted that while battery-electric vehicles are important, a singular transition is impractical for India's diverse market.
He highlighted India's strengths in alternative fuels, such as ethanol and biogas, which can support a variety of green technologies. The Indian government's initiatives on alternative fuels aim to reduce emissions and enhance energy self-reliance. Gulati stated that the future of mobility should encompass multiple technologies, including cleaner ICEs, to provide practical solutions for emerging markets facing infrastructure challenges.
