Two Biomethane Plants Proposed in Cootehill, Co Cavan
Two biomethane plants are proposed in Cootehill, Co Cavan, with Stream BioEnergy Ireland planning a large-scale anaerobic digestion facility to process 99,000 tons of organic waste annually, producing enough biomethane for 11,000 homes. Meanwhile, CycleØ is set to submit an application for its fourth AD plant, processing 90,000 tons of feedstock, as part of a €100 million investment in Ireland, although a local action group has emerged to oppose the plans.

Two significant biomethane projects are proposed for Cootehill, Co Cavan. Stream BioEnergy Ireland submitted plans for a large-scale anaerobic digestion (AD) plant at Maghernakelly, Monaghan, processing up to 99,000 tons of organic waste annually, primarily poultry manure.
The project aims to produce approximately 120 GWh of biomethane per year, enough for 11,000 homes, with a planning decision expected in February. Additionally, CycleØ plans to submit an application for its fourth AD plant in Cootehill, following a favorable feasibility study.
This facility is expected to process around 90,000 tons of feedstock annually, including grass silage and manure, as part of a €100 million investment in Ireland. A local action group has formed to oppose the planning application.
