UAB Launches SARGEX Project to Address Sargassum Algae Threat in Europe
BIOFUELS
The UAB has launched the SARGEX project to tackle the Sargassum algae threat affecting European coasts, particularly in the Mediterranean and Baltic regions. Coordinated by Mercè Llugany and Gustavo Pérez, the project will last four years and aims to sustainably manage Sargassum biomass.
It seeks to convert this challenge into opportunities by developing systems for creating bio-based products such as agricultural bioinputs, biochar, and biogas. The consortium consists of six European and three Cuban partners. SARGEX is funded under Horizon Europe's MSCA Staff Exchanges programme with a budget of €886,770.
