Uganda Launches National Integrated Clean Cooking Strategy for Sustainable Energy Transition

In late 2025, Uganda launched its first National Integrated Clean Cooking Strategy (NICCS) to transition from wood and charcoal to cleaner cooking options, with support from SEI, Berkeley Air Monitoring Group, the Clean Cooking Alliance, and the Centre for Integrated Research and Community Development Uganda. Currently, over 93% of households rely on wood and charcoal, leading to respiratory illnesses and environmental strain.

NICCS aims to unify various clean cooking initiatives, including liquefied petroleum gas, electric cooking, biogas, and ethanol projects, targeting 60% of households and institutions by the early 2030s. The strategy seeks to coordinate existing efforts and present a cohesive vision for clean cooking in Uganda, supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development.
