Uganda's Iron Ore Factory in Rubanda Faces Land Dispute and Sabotage Warnings
The establishment of an iron ore factory in Rubanda District is set to create over 15,000 jobs, but local land disputes threaten progress. Minister Henry Musasizi has warned against sabotage and emphasized the government's commitment to the project despite conflicts over land ownership.

Minister of Finance Henry Musasizi has warned against any sabotage of the planned iron ore factory in Rubanda District, which aims to create more than 15,000 jobs. The project is facing a dispute between local factions claiming rights to the 52 acres designated for the factory, complicating compensation processes.
The government plans to establish a facility for ore extraction and refining, with concentrate transported to existing facilities for final processing. Rubanda is home to significant iron ore reserves, estimated between 30 and 50 million tonnes, with grades of 55% to 68% iron content.
Previous plans for a large-scale steel smelting plant were shifted to Tororo due to infrastructure challenges. The government is investing in power infrastructure, including the $83.75 million Mirama-Kabale 132kV Power Substation, to support industrial needs. This project aligns with President Museveni's promises to enhance local job creation and mineral processing.
