UGM Develops Palm Oil Diplomacy Strategy to Strengthen Indonesia's Global Position
UGM's initiative aims to bolster Indonesia's palm oil industry against international regulatory pressures, notably the EU Deforestation Regulation. This training module will enhance the skills of negotiators and diplomats, addressing global perceptions and fostering stronger market positioning.

The Centre for World Trade Studies (PSPD) at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) is creating a specialized training module to safeguard Indonesia's palm oil industry from international regulations, particularly the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Supported by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and UNDP, the initiative will enhance the capabilities of Indonesian negotiators and diplomats.
The program adopts a whole-of-government approach, unifying ministries, academics, and smallholder farmers. Additionally, there is an increase in palm oil exports to China and Egypt, alongside emerging opportunities in biofuels and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This strategy could reduce dependency on traditional markets and enhance Indonesia's downstream competitiveness.
