UK Biomethane Production Targets and Impacts for Agriculture
The UK aims to boost biomethane production to 36TWh by 2035 and 65TWh by 2050, with potential reaching 120TWh. This shift could significantly benefit UK farms by providing new income streams while supporting decarbonization efforts.

The UK currently generates approximately 7TWh of energy from agricultural waste, but there are ambitious targets to expand biomethane production. The National Energy System Operator has recommended increasing production to 36TWh by 2035, advancing to 65TWh by 2050.
Cadent, the largest gas distribution network operator, aims to decarbonize its gas supply, with UK agriculture expected to provide a majority of the feedstock. A report indicates that biomethane output could reach 120TWh by 2050, enough to heat nearly half of UK homes.
The industry is moving towards long-term contracts with farmers to secure feedstock. The shift to biomethane presents opportunities for farmers to diversify income and improve soil health, while aiding the UK's decarbonization goals.
Potential environmental benefits include the removal of 27 million tonnes of CO2 annually and reduced reliance on artificial fertilizers through nutrient-rich digestate. However, farmers face challenges in financing and implementation of biomethane systems.
