The Towards Zero Food Waste initiative, organized by Universiti Putra Malaysia's Institute of Borneo Ecoscience, aims to improve food waste management awareness among food industry players in Bintulu, Sarawak. The pilot project, set to start in May, targets 400 food vendors, including restaurants and cafes, with over 200 businesses having already expressed interest.
The program seeks to educate participants on reducing food waste and converting unavoidable waste into environmentally friendly products such as biogas or compost. It will also provide composting bins and training sessions.
The initiative is expected to show results by the end of next year, positioning Bintulu as a leader in food waste reduction efforts in Malaysia. Collaboration with Bintulu Development Authority emphasizes the importance of this initiative, which aims to create a replicable model for other regions in Sarawak and nationally.
