Vanguard Renewables Research Highlights Biomethane Potential in America's Heartland for US Energy Leadership
Research by Vanguard Renewables identifies significant biomethane potential in America's Heartland, capable of transforming agriculture and enhancing US energy dominance. Utilizing Midwestern agricultural waste could generate 1,580 trillion Btu of renewable natural gas (RNG), surpassing current market levels. The analysis highlights the need for policy changes to ensure competitiveness in the growing global maritime fuel market, projected to reach $836 billion by 2034, while addressing gaps in the Renewable Fuel Standard that affect bioLNG used in maritime applications.

Vanguard Renewables' research indicates that America's Heartland can produce 1,580 trillion Btu of renewable natural gas (RNG) from agricultural waste, positioning the US to dominate the maritime fuel market. The global sustainable marine fuel market is set to grow from $13 billion in 2024 to $836 billion by 2034.
However, bioLNG's exclusion from the Renewable Fuel Standard limits investment potential. Bipartisan legislation aims to rectify this gap. States like Ohio could significantly boost RNG output by utilizing agricultural residues, contributing to an estimated GDP growth of $2 trillion to $3 trillion by 2050.
