The Venture Waste to Energy project in Dharan has shut down shortly after beginning operations. Established under an agreement between Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City, the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre, and Venture Waste to Energy Pvt.

Ltd., the facility aimed to process waste from the city to produce biogas and organic fertilizer. With an investment of Rs. 240 million and a subsidy of Rs. 70 million from international sources, the project faced closure after four months of inactivity due to insufficient government support and unclear regulations on gas sales.

Dharan generates 45 to 50 tonnes of waste daily, which is currently being dumped near the Seuti River. The project, inaugurated in January 2022, intended to convert organic waste into cooking gas and fertilizer, but has been stalled amid calls for policy formulation from the operator and local authorities.
